Celebrating 70 Years of the Indian Health Service: A Legacy of Care and a Future of Synergy

Healthcare Native American 1 min read , July 28, 2025

Earlier this month, the Indian Health Service (IHS) marked a remarkable milestone – 70 years of unwavering dedication to the health and well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Since its establishment in 1955, IHS has grown from 48 hospitals and 18 health centers into a nationwide network rooted in tradition, innovation, and culturally grounded care.

At WareBrook Health – a Joint Venture between Millbrook Support Services and Ware River Consulting – we are proud to align our mission with IHS, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), and the Native communities we serve under the Buy Indian Act.

IHS is more than a partner to us. It is the primary client of WareBrook Health and continues to be one of the top clients for Millbrook Support Services. This trusted relationship reflects our mutual commitment to improving health outcomes through culturally competent, community-focused healthcare delivery.

We believe in the power of synergy – when collaboration leads to transformation. That’s the heart of WareBrook Health: two organizations coming together with one purpose – to support the physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being of Indigenous communities for generations to come.

As we reflect on 70 years of IHS’s leadership and the dedication of its nearly 15,000 employees, we remain committed to advancing this mission – side by side – for the next seven generations.

Happy 70th Anniversary, Indian Health Service. Thank you for your legacy, your leadership, and your partnership in building a healthier future.
