Millbrook, along with its partner Ware River, recently made a deeply meaningful contribution to the Advent Episcopal Chapel in the Calico community on the Pine Ridge Reservation. This kind donation – made in memory of Ware River CEO Debra Goodier’s late father, Norman Howard Thompson, a respected tribal member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate – has enabled much-needed repairs to the chapel’s roof, replacing worn shingles with durable metal.
Roofing Renewal Sparks Interior Hope
Thanks to the caring support from Millbrook and Ware River, the Advent Chapel is preparing for a much-needed upgrade: replacing its aging shingled roof with durable metal. Once completed, this essential improvement is expected to bring newfound energy and enthusiasm from local volunteers, who are eager to begin the next phase – refreshing the chapel’s interior through painting, flooring, and cosmetic updates.
This upcoming roof replacement is already serving as a catalyst for broader restoration efforts and renewed community pride.
A Vibrant Community Hub
Far beyond a place of worship, the Advent Chapel serves as a vital center for the community:
Holiday celebrations and seasonal gatherings
- Social events, including potlucks and educational programs
- Fundraisers and outreach efforts that bring residents together
Despite lacking indoor plumbing and still relying on an outhouse, the chapel remains a place of sanctity, warmth, and shared purpose, reflecting the resilient, simple way of life of the community.
Honoring Norman Howard Thompson
The donation stands as a moving tribute to Norman Howard Thompson (January 5, 1935 – July 20, 2025), whose legacy includes military service during the Vietnam War and a lifetime of dedication to family and faith. As a tribal member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe, his spirit of service is honored through this restoration in his memory.
This gift not only preserves a building but uplifts a community, carrying forward Norman’s values of service, faith, and unity.
Why This Matters
- Structural stability: The metal roof ensures protection from harsh weather, safeguarding the chapel for years to come.
- Community empowerment: With safety secured, local members can engage hands-on in beautifying the interior – fostering local involvement and pride.
- Fulfillment of legacy: The project honors Norman’s memory through tangible, positive impact on his people.
Looking Ahead: Interior Beautification Plans
Once the new roof is in place, the community looks forward to working on the chapel’s interior. Plans are taking shape for cosmetic improvements that will refresh the space and make it more welcoming for worship and community gatherings.
This enthusiasm reflects how even small upgrades can restore pride and beauty to a cherished local space.
In Closing
Millbrook and Ware River’s support of the Advent Chapel is a powerful example of how honoring an individual’s legacy can uplift an entire community. Their contribution ensures that the chapel remains a safe, welcoming, and vibrant space – one that Norman Thompson would have honored. As renovation efforts begin, the chapel is poised to shine even brighter as the heart of the Calico community on Pine Ridge.
