Veterans Day: Honoring Our Heroes

Holidays Military 4 min read , November 8, 2023

On Veterans Day, we at Millbrook Support Services, a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), would like to take a moment to honor and express our gratitude to all the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This day holds great significance as it allows us to recognize the sacrifices made by our veterans and show our appreciation for their service.

Healthcare & Employment Challenges

As a SDVOSB, Millbrook understands the unique medical and employment challenges faced by those who have served in the military and as a direct result is suppling Physicians, Nurses, Advanced Practice Providers, and Allied Health staffing services to the Veteran Affairs. Additionally, we are proud to employ veterans and provide them with meaningful career opportunities. Their skills, discipline, and dedication contribute greatly to our success as an organization.

Being a U.S. Army combat Veteran myself, I have firsthand experience and a deep understanding of the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. I am honored to have served my country, and extremely grateful to continue to serve my fellow Veterans through government agencies such as the Veterans Health Administration or our numerous commercial clients. Millbrook strives to create opportunities and provide resources for fellow veterans transitioning into civilian life.

The History of Veterans Day

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day was first established in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. It marked the armistice, or ceasefire, that went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. This date symbolizes peace and serves as a reminder of the courage displayed by those who fought during this global conflict.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. This decision was made to honor all veterans, not just those who served in World War I. Since then, Veterans Day has become an annual observance dedicated to recognizing and honoring all American veterans.

Recognizing Sacrifice

While it is important to honor and celebrate our heroes on Veterans Day, we must also remember that their service often comes at great personal cost. Many veterans return home with physical injuries or emotional scars, facing challenges as they reintegrate into civilian life. It is crucial to support and provide resources for veterans in need, ensuring they receive the care and assistance they deserve.

Supporting Veterans

At Millbrook, we believe in actively supporting veterans beyond just this one day of recognition. We strive to create an inclusive work environment that fosters growth and provides resources for transitioning veterans. Additionally, we partner with organizations dedicated to assisting veterans in various aspects of their lives, including healthcare, housing, education, and employment.

How You Can Help

There are numerous ways you can show your support for veterans throughout the year:

  • Volunteer: Offer your time and skills to organizations that support veterans.
  • Donate: Contribute financially to charities focused on assisting veterans.
  • Employment Opportunities: Consider hiring veterans or supporting businesses owned by veterans.
  • Educate Yourself: Learn about the challenges faced by veterans and how you can help make a difference.

Conclusion

On this Veterans Day, let us come together as a nation to honor and appreciate the remarkable individuals who have served in our military. Their dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. At Millbrook, we are proud to support veterans and recognize their invaluable contributions to our society.
